ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION

It is a disease characterized by increased pressure within the blood vessels, leading over time to compromise of the heart, kidneys and eyes (retina). We speak of hypertension, when the blood pressure measurement is above 120/80 mmHg. It is known that approximately 50% of the inhabitants of the United States (over 20 years of age) suffer from high blood pressure without knowing it. More frequent in males and in blacks.

What factors favor its development?

The hectic lifestyle that characterizes us today has an important role, stress, anxiety, type A personality, sedentary lifestyle, socioeconomic conditions, inadequate diet, alcoholism and smoking. Also family history of diabetes or hypertension, obesity or overweight, kidney disease, high cholesterol.

How can I know if I have hypertension?

As it is a silent disease (it does not produce symptoms for the most part) you should visit your medical provider regularly.
